The Galli Bibiena of Bologna were an influential family of architects and stage designers, whose books, published in 1711, were widely known. The young Giovanni Battista Piranesi, aspiring to be an architect, spent some time studying with Ferdinando Galli Bibiena, the author of this book, and would have known this and other works by the Bibienas.
