This textile belonged to the Dutch artist and collector W. O. J. Nieuwenkamp, who traveled extensively in Indonesia beginning in the 1890s. Nieuwenkamp was the first European artist to visit Bali, and in 1918 he traveled to Sumba, Flores, Timor, and Alor, where he documented the local culture in writings and drawings.
