Gods Requesting Buddha to Preach Artist: Unknownfrom Gandhara

2nd–3rd century

Asian Art

In this relieft, the Buddha is shown seated in a yogic posture with his right hand raised in a gesture of reassurance, the granting of the "absence of fear" (abhaya mudra). In Buddhism, this is a teaching gesture, since it is through Buddhist teachings that the absence of the fear of death is granted. In his left hand, the Buddha holds the end of his monastic robe.
