The Actor Ichikawa Ennosuke III as Musashibo Benkei Artist: Tsuruya Kōkei (Japanese, born 1946)

Dec 1995

Asian Art

This print shows the versatility of Tsuruya Kōkei’s actor-portrait repertoire. Several of the prints on display reveal the artist’s taste for luxury through the generous application of beautiful pigments and mica on very thin paper. This particular work draws the viewer’s eye with an intense, close-up design showing the climactic moment in the play Kanjinchō. The warrior Benkei, dressed as a traveling monk, makes the painful decision to beat his master Minamoto no Yoshitsune, disguised as a porter, with a stick in order to save the latter from certain death should his true identity be discovered. The internal conflict of Benkei is palpable in his facial expression; his feigned anger at the porter, who was delaying the group due to his resemblance to Yoshitsune, can be seen in Benkei’s eyes and knitted eyebrows.
