Offering Post (Peo)

19th century

Indo-Pacific Art

The Nage of southern central Flores set up large ritual posts at the center of the village. The forked top of the post represents the two clans that sacrifice there, while the single trunk represents their shared origin in Nage history. The posts are elaborately carved with diamond and scroll patterns. Here, snakes descend from the top of the two forks.
