Untitled (Boy in Aquarium), from the series Children's Games Artist: Jocelyn Lee (American, born Italy 1962, B.A. 1986)

1990–93

Photography

Jocelyn Lee’s artistic practice examines the arc of human life, as she follows her subjects through liminal moments such as pregnancy and death. Lee explored childhood in the series Children’s Games, making what she calls "psychological portraits" of children at play. Looking to make images that went beyond innocence and simplicity—qualities more often presented in images of children—she examined the intricacies of play and the symbolic meanings that accompany it. In Untitled (Arms Open and Closed in Water Spray) (2009.201.1), she juxtaposed the open and closed posture of the two girls, each engaged in her own private version of play. In Untitled (Boy in Aquarium), Lee photographed a boy squeezing himself into a small fishtank, emphasizing the playful nature of his action and foreshadowing his inevitable growth.
