American Paintings and Sculpture

Against a golden autumnal landscape, British Lieutenant General John Burgoyne hands his sword in surrender to American Major General Horatio Gates, at center. Gates refuses it, according to military custom, and gestures Burgoyne toward the tent to take refreshment. The principal officers of the American army are assembled in the right foreground, while the British troops are crossing the meadows in the background. After this victory, the French government officially recognized the American republic and sent troops and weapons to bolster the American forces at Yorktown, Virginia.
