John Trumbull painted this posthumous portrait of his father from an earlier life study. Jonathan Trumbull, Sr., began his career with the intention of entering the ministry but established himself in commerce instead. He had pursued politics since 1733, and he became governor of Connecticut in 1769. During the Revolutionary War, he supervised the distribution of supplies to the American troops, making an invaluable contribution to the war effort.
