Cassandra Albinson, Curator of Paintings and Sculpture, Yale Center for British Art, and Izabel Gass, Graduate Research Assistant, Yale University Art Gallery and Yale Center for British Art, examine the role that gender plays in defining the “Romantic artist.” They ask: What are the characteristics of the archetypal Romantic artist? Are these characteristics implicitly coded as male? Were there female Romantic artists?
