Film Screening, Where Is Rocky II?

Film Screening, Where Is Rocky II?

Join us for a film screening of Where Is Rocky II? (2016), the latest film from Academy Award–winning filmmaker, director, and contemporary artist Pierre Bismuth.

The film follows Bismuth’s quest to find Rocky II, a “forgotten” sculpture by the American artist Ed Ruscha. In 1979 Ruscha concealed this work—a fake rock, made from fiberglass—in the Mojave Desert, without ever disclosing its actual location. Bismuth hires a private investigator to help him locate Ruscha’s “rock,” and their journey, which takes them from California to London and back, blurs the lines between truth and fiction. Awarded the Jury Prize at the 2018 Festival International du film sur l’Aart (Artfifa) in Montreal, Where Is Rocky II? speaks to anyone who has ever been (or still is) involved in research of any kind.

The screening is followed by a discussion. Presented in collaboration with the Modern and Contemporary Forum in the Department of the History of Art, with generous support from the Department of French.
