In this virtual close-looking session, Kevin Adkisson, Associate Curator, Cranbrook Center for Collections and Research, Bloomfield Hills, Michigan, and Alexandra Ward, the Marcia Brady Tucker Senior Fellow, American Decorative Arts, Yale University Art Gallery, examine furniture and other objects made from plywood to show how this industrial material became instrumental in modern design. Made from layers of cross-grained sheets of wood, plywood is a strong, versatile material that can be carved, bent, and molded into shapes and forms impossible to achieve in solid wood. Together, we explore how technological advances and creative engineering allowed designers to manufacture complex curves out of this flat material. Generously sponsored by the Martin A. Ryerson Lectureship Fund.
