Yale University Art Gallery Bulletin 2016: European Art

An annual compilation of themed essays and Gallery news, the Yale University Art Gallery Bulletin publishes original scholarship on works in the Gallery’s collection. The 2016 Bulletin focuses on European art, exploring a cluster of works recently recovered from storage as well as notable acquisitions. Articles examine, for instance, Titian’s Portrait of Guidobaldo II della Rovere, Duke of Urbino and an early 17th-century automaton clock in the shape of the goddess Diana on her chariot, two works that entered the Gallery’s collection around 50 years ago but that have been properly identified, studied, and restored only within the past few years. A minute but exquisite drawing of the Virgin and Child by Fra Angelico and the monumental painting Christ Carrying the Cross by Luis de Morales are also highlighted, among other new additions to the growing collection of European art. Essays by the Gallery’s curators, conservators, and scientists in addition to outside scholars and leading experts showcase the wide-ranging research approaches and ongoing interdisciplinary collaboration at the Gallery.
