This joint production of the Yale University Art Gallery and Philadelphia’s Wood Turning Center presents the varied and colorful work of 70 artists, along with artist portraits. Ranging from the utilitarian to the whimsical, their creations are celebrated in the context of woodturning’s history in America, technical innovations that have arisen, and the physical properties that lend themselves to a seemingly unlimited array of shapes and patterns. Published on the occasion of an exhibition at the Minneapolis Institute of the Arts; the Renwick Gallery of the Smithsonian American Art Museum, Washington, D.C.; and the Gallery, the catalogue illustrates and highlights 134 works, providing information on the material and structure of the pieces and explaining, in many cases, how each was made.
