Dura-Europos: The Ancient City and the Yale Collection

Susan B. Matheson

This small publication provides an introduction to the ancient city founded on the Euphrates River in 300 b.c. and excavated between 1928 and 1937 by Yale University and the French Academy of Inscriptions and Letters. Most of the artifacts from Dura-Europos remained in Syria, but Yale received a richly varied collection of close to 100,000 objects—approximately half of the objects excavated. Author and curator Susan B. Matheson provides an intriguing overview of the city’s daily life, religion, and government.
