Charles Demuth: Poster Portraits, 1923–1929

This extensively researched catalogue brings Charles Demuth’s (1883–1935) extraordinary “poster portraits” together for the first time. Made in honor of such friends as Marsden Hartley, Georgia O’Keeffe, Wallace Stevens, and Eugene O’Neill, these paintings, watercolors, and drawings used objects and wordplay to convey the life, rather than the likeness, of the sitters. Special attention is devoted to the iconic painting I Saw the Figure 5 in Gold (1928, Metropolitan Museum of Art), Demuth’s portrait of William Carlos Williams.
