I am new to all of this—what is a podcast?
The term “podcast” comes from a combination of the words “broadcasting” and “iPod.” An iPod is a portable digital audio player. Podcasting is a technology that allows for the distribution of audio, video, and other media files over the Internet. As with the word “radio,” “podcast” can mean both the method of distribution and the content. Podcasts are similar to radio programs, and, in fact, you can think of a podcast as a radio show that you subscribe to (kind of like a magazine). Podcasts can be played via your computer or personal mp3 player.

How do I listen to the Yale University Art Gallery Art Podcast?
Podcasts work best when you subscribe to them (see next question). They function as serial episodes and tend to build on previous information, developing relationships with their listeners. Once you subscribe to the Gallery’s Art Podcast using a program such as iTunes or Odeo (both easily accessible and free to download), you will automatically receive new episodes to your computer. Once the podcast is downloaded to your computer, you can listen to it through the computer or through an mp3 player. You can also download and listen to the most recent episode of Art Podcast from the Gallery’s Web site, though this means you will not have a subscription and will not automatically receive new episodes.

How do I subscribe to the Gallery’s Art Podcast?
If you are using iTunes or Odeo, open the program and go to “Podcasts.” You can then navigate to visual arts (or alternatively, do a search for “Yale University Art Gallery.” Just click “Subscribe” in the main window to download the latest episode. You will then receive updates automatically.

What equipment do I need to listen to the Art Podcast?
You will need a computer, access to the Internet, and a program (often known as an “aggregator”) that will function as your podcast subscription software. There are numerous free programs to choose from, available through the Internet. Once you have subscribed to or downloaded the audio file, you can listen to the podcast through your computer, or transfer the audio files to a portable digital music player.

Is the Gallery’s Art Podcast the same as the audio guide available at the museum?
No, they are two different audio programs. The audio guide is available at the Gallery and is used by visitors to learn more about specific works of art as they view them in the galleries. In contrast, the Art Podcast is more like a radio program discussing current art news as well as new ideas and conversations taking place within the Gallery. With the Art Podcast, you can listen at home or in the car and the experience doesn’t require a visit to the museum (though we hope you’ll visit us often and see all of the great art in person).
