GALLERY'S RENOWNED AMERICAN ART COLLECTION RETURNS TO NEW HAVEN

Life, Liberty, and the Pursuit of Happiness, showcases American art from the Yale University Art Gallery. The yearlong exhibition will be presented in three parts beginning in July 2011. Paintings, sculpture, decorative arts, prints, and photographs—including many of the Gallery’s greatest treasures—document two centuries of American culture.

STUDENT-CURATED EXHIBITION EXPLORES NOTIONS OF ART AND RACE IN AMERICA

A collaboration among a team of students from Yale and the University of Maryland, College Park, "Embodied: Black Identities in American Art from the Yale University Art Gallery" features works that address, question, and complicate the paradigms that have mapped meanings onto African American bodies throughout history. The 54 works selected for the exhibition, representing the Gallery’s commitment during the past decade to growing this area of the collection, include paintings, sculpture, decorative arts, prints, drawings, and photographs. A fully illustrated catalogue is available.

GALLERY COLLABORATES ON LAUNCH OF JAMES J. ROSS ARCHIVE OF AFRICAN IMAGES, 1590–1920 (RAAI)

A new and exciting website of close to 5,000 published images of African art, the James J. Ross Archive of African Images, 1590–1920 (RAAI), has been launched at Yale University. This unique archive, accessible at http://raai.library.yale.edu, significantly enriches the broad range of resources available to students and researchers of African art at Yale, including the significant collection of African art held by the Yale University Art Gallery.

"Italian Paintings from the Richard L. Feigen Collection" features some 60 paintings from one of the finest private collections of Italian art in existence. On view from May 28 through September 12, 2010, the exhibition includes major works from the 14th through the 17th century by Guercino, and Orazio Gentileschi.

YALE UNIVERSITY ACQUIRES PHOTOGRAPHER LEE FRIEDLANDER'S ARCHIVE AND MASTER PRINTS

The Yale University Art Gallery and Yale's Beinecke Rare Book and Manuscript Library announce the joint acquisition of the Lee Friedlander Archive and 2,000 of the photographer's master prints. With this acquisition, the Yale University Art Gallery becomes the largest holder of Friedlander's work by any museum, and the Beinecke Library becomes home to the preliminary work and records that document the career of one of America's most original and prolific photographers.
