An influential painter, printmaker, teacher, and theoretician, Josef Albers is best known for his Homage to the Square series, painted between 1950 and 1976. The series examines the single pictorial format of the square, on which Albers applied superimposed squares of color to create optical effects. Albers imparted his ideas on color and perception as professor at the Bauhaus school in Dessau (1925–33) and at Black Mountain College (1933–49); as head of the Department of Design at the Yale School of Art (1950–58); and in The Interaction of Color (published in 1963). The Yale University Art Gallery is a major repository of works by Albers and is one of three institutions in the world with a complete collection of his prints.
