| Richard Serra (American, born 1939) Stacks, 1990 Rolled steel, 93 x 96 x 10 in. (236.2 x 243.8 x 25.4 cm) Katharine Ordway Fund 1990.2.1a–b ©2004 Richard Serra / Artists Rights Society (ARS), New York Stacks consists of two rectangular steel masses, each ninety-three inches high by ninety-six inches wide by ten inches deep. They are inserted into the floor at an angle of three degrees from the vertical, centered on a long axis, and placed parallel to each other, sixty feet apart. The viewer enters the field created by the magnetism between the two elements and engages in a dynamic relationship with the work as he or she moves around and through the sculpture. Stacks was created as a site-specific piece for the Swartwout building at Yale, but the artist will re-site the work in the sunken courtyard of the Kahn building when the renovation of the building is completed in 2006. |
