This work is from a series of paintings begun by the artist in 1967. The series takes its name from a neighborhood in Santa Monica, California, that borders on the Pacific Ocean. The large scale and subdued palette of the painting is representative of Diebenkorn's body of work. The artist's hand and thought process can be seen clearly in the working of the surface of the painting, with drawn lines and construction of transparent fields of color. While landscape and light were points of departure in the artist's conception of this work, the spare clarity of forms and energetic lines confirm his primary pursuit of painting an abstraction.
