Although French, Claude Lorrain spent his entire working career in Rome, where he became the city's principal painter of landscape and the model for generations of classical landscape painters through the nineteenth century. This painting was commissioned in 1648 by Hans Georg Werdmüller, a Swiss military engineer, who probably ordered it through an agent.
