The maker of this chalice, Johann Christoph Heyne, was a Moravian minister who emigrated from his native Germany to Pennsylvania in the 1750s. Not surprisingly, most of his surviving work as a pewterer consists of objects used to celebrate the Eucharist in Lutheran and Moravian churches in German-speaking communities around Lancaster. Heyne had trained as a pewterer in Sweden, where he absorbed the Baroque style so superbly expressed in this covered chalice. Typical of the Baroque in northern continental Europe are this object's tall proportions and controlled rhythm of concave and convex moldings. Heyne used the same mold to make both the cover and base.
