Research on World War II–Era History of Ownership
The works posted here are representative examples of an ongoing project to investigate the provenance of the Gallery's European paintings and drawings; more works will be added in the future. The Gallery is also a participating institution, along with more than one hundred other museums in the U.S., in the American Association of Museums' Nazi-Era Provenance Internet Portal.
A claim was filed in October 2000, on behalf of the estate of the late Josephine Weinmann, for recovery of Le Grand Pont by Gustave Courbet, on loan to the Yale University Art Gallery since 1981 from the collection of Dr. Herbert and Mrs. Monika Schaefer. A settlement agreement in 2001 led to the gift of the painting to the Gallery and its temporary return to the Weinmann family on ten-year loan. Two other paintings lent to the Gallery by Dr. and Mrs. Schaefer, Banquet in Temple Ruins by Hubert Robert and Drinnen und Draussen (Inside and Outside) by George Grosz, are presently the subject of provenance research [see the Hamburger Kunsthalle Paintings].
An inquiry, on behalf of the heirs of A. S. Drey Gallery, Munich, regarding the provenance of Apotheosis of Saint Roch by Giovanni Battista Tiepolo was resolved with documentation that the painting had been purchased by Yale directly from the Paul Drey Gallery in New York in 1937.
