From the exhibition Many Things Placed Here and There: The Dorothy and Herbert Vogel Collection at the Yale University Art Gallery:

In this work, Dorothea Rockburne created lines through printing and folding. First, she etched gray lines into a copper plate and printed them on a sheet of paper, which she then folded along those lines. The folded paper was then run through an inked aquatint plate, giving the work its tone and texture. The pressure of the etching process embossed the folds, creating a sculptural quality that defies the flatness of the paper. Rockburne called the work Locus because "the generating point is in the center and the spines move along the center." Although Locus is not from the Vogel Collection---and indeed the Vogels rarely acquired works of its size due to the space constraints of their apartment---it is an investigation of process, material, and close looking, reflecting the Vogels' sensibilities.
