English-born silversmith Arthur J. Stone established a workshop in Gardner, Massachusetts, in 1901. Herman W. Glendenning, one of Stone’s apprentices, made this handwrought sugar bowl the same year he became a master. The double-bellied bowl, stepped lid, and flamelike finial evoke silver made in Boston in the eighteenth century, although the overall object is taller in proportion to period examples and the use of ivory elements is unusual in colonial silver. The crest and initials belong to the noted antiquarian and collector George Dudley Seymour.
