Prints and Drawings

This lithograph of Sacramento City depicts a gold-rush town in the midst of a population boom. In April 1849, Sacramento had a population of 150; by December, it was up to 3,500. Among the numerous businesses shown here is the Eagle Theater, California’s first theater, which opened on October 18, 1849. Connected to the Eagle is the Round Tent, a gambling emporium that offered “such diversions as music, a handsomely decorated bar, and a picture gallery of girls.” Docked along the Embarcadero is the steamer Senator, which became the first ship to travel round-trip between Sacramento and San Francisco in a single day.
