American Paintings and Sculpture

Not on view

A Connecticut native, miniaturist Anson Dickinson briefly received instruction from the celebrated miniaturist Edward Malbone. Dickinson’s rectangular format portraits set into leather cases still display a delicacy associated with Malbone’s style, contrasting with the bolder color contrasts adopted by Charles Fraser and other contemporaries. Miniaturists were often commissioned to commemorate several generations of one family. Dickinson first depicted General Epaphroditus Champion, who fought in the Revolutionary War and became a successful businessman before being elected to the U.S. House of Representatives from 1807 to 1817, and his wife Lucretia together as a marital pair. This portrait of their son-in-law, the Honorable Asa Bacon, was also commissioned as part of a couple, although the miniature of the Champions’ daughter Lucretia is now unlocated. Bacon was a Yale graduate associated with America’s first law school in Litchfield, Connecticut. He and Lucretia Champion married in 1807 and lost three daughters in early infancy. The third generation is represented by another miniature by Dickinson, depicting the Bacons’ son Epaphroditus Champion, named after his grandfather.
