Provenance

Provenance

Ella Hamilton Van Liew (1855–1934) [see note 1], New York, by March 1933; sold through Henry Hammond Taylor 1878–1933), Bridgeport, Conn. to Francis P. Garvan (1875–1937), New York, March 16, 1933; given to Yale University Art Gallery, New Haven, Conn., 1936

Note 1: It’s possible that the original owner of the table was Randolph Van Liew (b. 1791), who moved to New York from New Brunswick, New Jersey, during the early 1820s. His son Augustus, later Ella Hamilton Van Liew's father-in-law, was born in New York on November 1, 1825 (membership records of the Holland Society, New York). For further information on the Van Liews' ancestry, see YUAG acc.no. 1936.308, also purchased by Hammond on behalf of Garvan from Hamilton van Liew.
