Brooch Maker: Sandra Enterline (American, born 1960)

American Decorative Arts

Not on view

In this example of her early work, Sandra Enterline applied tenets of Minimalism—the belief that art should omit elements that are not necessary—to jewelry. Her Minimalist constructions idealize form over decoration and are so spare that they are almost severe in style. In contrast to the restrained shape, Enterline enlivened the silver surface of this brooch with filing and oxidation. The discreet gold triangles set into the sides of the notch add an element of discovery and tempt the viewer to look closer.
