Provenance

Provenance

The early history of the writing table and bookcase was unknown when it was transferred from Silliman College at Yale to the Art Gallery in 1970. A fragment of a receipt dated 1901 recently was found wedged behind the pigeonholes in the upper case, and it may provide a clue to the early in not original owners. The bill is made out on the letterhead of Louis J. Goodman, "Dealer in Wood, Coal, Hay, Straw, Fertilizer, Farming Implements, & Champion W[agons?],” in Litchfield, Conn., and it is addressed to a Mrs. M. D. F. McLaughlin. From this slim evidence, one might surmise that it was owned at an early date by Mrs. McLaughlin. Gift in 1970 to Yale University Art Gallery, New Haven, Conn.
