Memorial for Henry G. Staats Artist: Unknown, possibly Ezra Ames

ca. 1802

American Paintings and Sculpture

Not on view

Executed around 1802 in Albany, this miniature depicts a weeping woman dressed in black and partially veiled by willow boughs. While the woman and tomb are painted on ivory, the willow tree is painted on the inside of the locket’s glass cover, giving the scene a three-dimensional feel. The initials “HGS” on the tomb likely belong to Henry G. Staats, born on January 16, 1802, in Albany. On the reverse, cut-gold initials “RC” probably stand for his brother Richard Cuyler, born on July 16, 1800, and remembered by locks of plaited hair. While no records of the boys’ deaths have been found, the birth of a son christened Richard Henry in 1803 suggests that his parents bravely named him after his deceased brothers. The initials of their mother, Catherine Cuyler Staats, are engraved at the top of the locket’s reverse, suggesting that she is the figure portrayed on the locket’s cover. The somber scene captures the family’s grief at the loss of two young sons.
