Saint Francis Consoled by a Musical Angel Engraver: Agostino Carracci (Italian, 1557–1602)
After: Francesco Vanni (Italian, 1564–1610)

1595

Prints and Drawings

Long thought to be an independent copy of Vanni’s etching Saint Francis Consoled by a Musical Angel, this engraving was in fact commissioned by Vanni, who asked Agostino Carracci, a Bolognese engraver with whom he was acquainted, to produce a variation on his original design. Carracci’s composition is in reverse of Vanni’s because Carracci, unlike Vanni, maintained the orientation of the drawn model. Other differences between Carracci’s and Vanni’s prints—the presence of a clothed, adolescent angel instead of a nude putto, for example—remain to be explained.
