Prints and Drawings

Gabor Peterdi created the various textures in this unique print through a process called soft-ground etching. Traditionally, this technique imitated the look of crayon, chalk, or graphite on textured paper, and thus was utilized to reproduce such drawings. During the modern era, however, artists such as Peterdi adopted the technique as a means to reproduce a multitude of textures. They realized that by pressing any of a variety of materials (here, netting and crumbled cloth or paper) into a soft wax ground, the resultant design could be etched into a plate and printed.
