Tree Trunk, from the series Tree Planting Artist: Sarah Anne Johnson (Canadian, born 1976, M.F.A. 2004)

2003–4

Photography

In this series, Canadian artist Sarah Anne Johnson chronicled her experience as a planter during summer breaks from the Yale School of Art. Tree planting in Canada has become an annual rite of passage for thousands of young people, who together seed half a billion new trees each year to replenish harvested tracts of state-owned forests. Johnson shows that the work is grueling even for seasoned planters: Untitled (Orange Duct Tape) (2005.77.7) captures a sliver of exposed, clean skin beneath the bracelet of a worker whose hand and arm are dusted with soil and whose fingers are taped to protect against rocks and debris. Within the series, the juxtaposition of images of planters with images of nature, such as Tree Trunk, highlights the profound connection these young people feel to the land.
