Studio Program, Glassblowing Demonstration at the Yale Glass Lab

Alabastron, Roman, Eastern Mediterranean, ca. 1st century A.D. Free-blown glass with marbled decoration. Yale University Art Gallery, Hobart and Edward Small Moore Memorial Collection, Bequest of Mrs. William H. Moore

Glassmaking originated in Mesopotamia in the third millennium B.C. and evolved through a long process of cross-cultural circulation and borrowing, as well as the innovations of individual workshops. Inspired by objects that trace the technical progression of glassmaking on display in the exhibition “Drink That You May Live”: Ancient Glass from the Yale University Art Gallery, this live demonstration invites visitors to explore and learn basic techniques of modern-day glassblowing. Presented in conjunction with the exhibition “Drink That You May Live”: Ancient Glass from the Yale University Art Gallery.
