Performance, Live Jazz in Jazz Lives

Please join us for an afternoon of live jazz by local middle and high school musicians and bands in the exhibition Jazz Lives: The Photographs of Lee Friedlander and Milt Hinton. Many notable jazz musicians began playing music in middle and high school bands and orchestras. These organizations were a way for students to hone their skills and create a musical community of their peers. Milt Hinton’s own early start as a musician began this way, by playing the violin and the tuba for ensembles at his public school in Chicago; he later devoted much of his adult life to teaching aspiring young bassists. The inclusion in Jazz Lives of performances by local New Haven middle and high school musicians and bands honors this long-standing tradition of inspiring students to play jazz through music education in schools.
