Music and Conversation: East of the Wallace Line

Join us for an evening of Indonesian music under the direction of Maho Ishiguro and conversation with Ruth Barnes, the Thomas Jaffe Curator of Indo-Pacific Art. The members of Yale Central Javanese Gamelan Ensemble, which is comprised of Yale undergraduate and graduate students as well as community members, will present two pieces, Ladrang Wilujeng Pelog Barang and Gangsaran Roning Tawang Pelog Nem at 5:30 pm and 6:45 pm. There will also be a brief demonstration which will explain how the musical pieces are put together.

In between the musical performance, Ruth Barnes will engage in conversation with students in the galleries. Camille Hoffman, M.F.A. candidate, has been inspired in her work by the Indonesian textiles in our collection; Camille and Ruth will discuss the Indonesian textiles on display in our Indo-Pacific Galleries. Sarah Casson, MESc candidate, has just returned from two months of field research in eastern Indonesia and Ruth will be talking to Sarah in East of the Wallace Line about her travels and observations.

Presented in conjunction with the exhibition East of the Wallace Line: Monumental Art from Indonesia and New Guinea.
