Lecture, Out of Clay: The Primacy of Craft in Southern California Art

Andrew Perchuk, Deputy Director, Getty Research Institute, examines the unique role that ceramics played in shaping an avant-garde in Southern California. The methods, techniques, and theories of the ceramic sculptors John Mason, Ken Price, and Peter Voulkos had a profound impact on artists as diverse as Larry Bell, Judy Chicago, and Robert Irwin and established many of the terms that defined an advanced art practice for the postwar generation in Los Angeles.

John Mason, renowned Los Angeles sculptor, will join Perchuk for a conversation about Mason’s work following the lecture.

Reception to follow. Generously sponsored by the Oswaldo Rodriguez Roque Memorial Lectureship Fund.
