Gallery Talk, Rome’s Military Power in the Round

Solidus of Honorius from Mediolanum, Roman, A.D. 394–402

Solidus of Honorius from Mediolanum, Roman, A.D. 394–402. Gold. Yale University Art Gallery, The Mark Deitz, Class of 1969, Collection of Ancient Coins, Gift of Paula Deitz

Benjamin D. R. Hellings, the Ben Lee Damsky Assistant Curator of Numismatics, presents a selection from the collection’s 16,000+ Roman coins that represented Rome’s military power. The talk incorporates coins from across the Roman world, which date from the first to the fifth century A.D. Participants are invited to handle Roman gold, silver, and bronze coins, as they learn about the iconographic messages that Roman emperors wished to convey to both subjects and rivals.
