Antonia Bartoli, the Nina and Lee Griggs Fellow in the Department of European Art, addresses the temporal life of the art object using the example of the Double-Sided Processional Cross (ca. 1310), attributed to the Master of the Gubbio Cross. The talk explores how changing ownership affects an object—both conceptually and physically, and especially with regard to its conservation and display—from an object’s early use in ecclesiastical ceremonies to its aesthetic value in a private collection, and finally, to its art historical value for a teaching museum.
