Exhibition Tour, Nature and Celebration in Byobu: The Grandeur of Japanese Screens

Join Sadako Ohki, the Japan Foundation Curator of Japanese Art, for a tour of the third and final installation of the special exhibition Byobu: The Grandeur of Japanese Screens. Nature and Celebration in Byobu explores both the beauty of nature and the festivities of the Japanese people. The commissions for the byobu in this group came from a wide range of social groups—from high-ranking samurai lords to nouveau-riche merchants, and from literati intellectuals to communities of shrine and temple supporters. The most recent work on view, a semi-abstract folding screen from 2004, was made for the tea ceremony, as byobu have been for hundreds of years, demonstrating that the traditional art and cultural of Japan have continued unbroken and thrive in new and exciting ways.
