Artist Talk, Kohei Okamoto

Kohei Okamoto, the foremost Japanese calligrapher, visits the Gallery in conjunction with the special exhibition Byobu: The Grandeur of Japanese Screens.

Mr. Okamoto will give a brief talk entitled Calligraphy and the Beauty of Japan followed by a two-part demonstration. First, he will emulate traditional Japanese-style (wayō) calligraphy which was established in the 10th and 11th centuries; then, he will brush a contemporary calligraphy in his personal style which is derived from the so-called “flying white” technique (hihakutai) developed by Priest Kukai in the 9th century.
